WHAT IS A COLD ROOM

A cold room is a specially designed storage area used to maintain a consistently low temperature for the preservation of perishable items, such as food, pharmaceuticals, or other temperature-sensitive products. It is typically equipped with refrigeration systems to control the temperature and humidity levels within a specific range, preventing spoilage and extending the shelf life of the stored items. Cold rooms are commonly used in various industries to ensure proper storage conditions for their products.

Cold Storage Rooms

1. Insulated Enclosure: The cold store is a large, insulated enclosure constructed with walls, a ceiling, and a floor that are heavily insulated to prevent heat exchange with the external environment. The insulation helps maintain a consistent temperature inside the room. Core material of them mainly polyurethane (PUR) and the sandwich panels has lock systems camlocks mostly. Some of manufacturers are offering (PIR) fireproof panels too but PIR panels can’t have camlock details. So that means less insulation but fireproof core materials.

2. Refrigeration System: The heart of a cold store is its refrigeration system. It includes a compressor, condenser, evaporator, and expansion valve. The refrigeration system cools the air inside the room, removing heat and maintaining the desired low temperature. However don’t forget that goal is not cooling the room, but preserving the foods and goods.

3. Temperature Control System: A temperature control system is used to regulate and monitor the temperature within the cold store. It ensures that the temperature remains within the desired range, typically between -18°C (0°F) to 4°C (40°F), depending on the stored items. Or maybe -40°C too. Depends on cooling systems of the storage.

4. Door(s): Cold stores have one or more entry/exit doors. These doors are also insulated and equipped with gaskets to prevent warm air from entering and cold air from escaping when the doors are closed. The gaskets has also special heaters inside of them for freezing rooms so within this feature doors can keep work constantly without freezing.

5. Lighting: Cold stores are equipped with specialized lighting fixtures that emit low heat. The lighting is designed not to raise the temperature inside the room significantly. They have also water-resistances.

6. Shelving/Racking: To organize and store the perishable items efficiently, cold stores often include shelves or racks. These help maximize the use of space and ensure proper airflow around the stored products.

7. Temperature Monitoring System: Many modern cold stores have temperature monitoring systems in place to continuously track and record the temperature. This data is crucial for maintaining the quality and safety of the stored items.

8. Humidity Control (Optional): Some cold stores have humidity control systems that regulate the humidity levels inside the room. Controlling humidity can be essential for certain types of products, such as fruits and vegetables.

These components work together to create an environment where the temperature and humidity levels are carefully controlled, allowing businesses and industries to store perishable goods for extended periods while preserving their freshness and quality. Cold stores are crucial in the food and pharmaceutical industries, among others, where proper storage conditions are essential for product safety and longevity.
